Marktzeuln - the pearl on the Rodach
The picturesque townscape is characterized by the Rodach river, the baroque half-timbered town hall
(16th - 17th centuries) and the Gothic-Baroque parish church (14th - 18th centuries). The small half-timbered
town is located in the northeastern part of the Lichtenfels district, not far from the mouth of the Main and
therefore also in the OBERMAIN JURA tourist region. The region is also known as “God’s Garden on the Upper
Main”. Over 50 architectural monuments adorn the medieval town center.
The Upper Gate and the Graitzer Gate are still preserved from the enclosure of the almost rectangular town plan.
The former market street “Am Flecken” serves as the backbone of the overall structure. The majority of the
representative half-timbered buildings that were built between the end of the 17th century and the first half of
the 18th century are concentrated here. A special spatial constellation is created by the retaining wall between
the middle section “Am Flecken” and the “Oberm Rathaus” area. Only at the southeastern end of Marktstrasse
are there significant modern changes, which are primarily associated with the construction of the new bridge over
the Rodach in 1970. Several historic buildings fell victim to the relocation of the route to the west and its widening.
In addition to structural evidence of agriculture, the oldest dated private building in the market town is also
located here, the Koppenhof, whose massive basement was built at the beginning of the 17th century.
