Small town with a big history
Located on the sunny side of the Thuringian Forest, the lovingly restored half-timbered town - now a technical
college town - is a travel destination for nature lovers, history buffs and art lovers. The founding of the
Schmalkaldic League and Luther's Schmalkaldic Articles are reminiscent of the Reformation period, when the city
was at the center of European politics. Wilhelmsburg Castle is one of the most important monuments of
Renaissance architecture in Germany with wonderful wall paintings, stucco work, and the "wooden" organ, one of
the oldest instruments in Europe that can still be played today.
