Wanfried in the Werra Valley
The lovely half-timbered town of Wanfried was once the terminus of the Weser-Werra shipping route and gained
great importance as a goods transshipment point in the 16th century. In 1608 Wanfried received town rights.
The historic half-timbered town with its equally magnificent half-timbered districts of Heldra, Altenburschla,
Völkershausen and Aue invites you to linger. In Wanfried, the historic Schlagd is impressive, with the Werraschute,
which transported goods to Wanfried during the times of the Weser-Werra shipping. Richly decorated merchant
houses, the historic half-timbered town hall, as well as the “Alte Post”, “Schwan” and the churches should not be
missed on a city tour.
A visit to the documentation center for German post-war history with a local history museum is another attraction.
The adventure city tours are scheduled and there is a regular city tour on Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. from the town
hall, Marktstrasse, from May to October. Take a look at the online event calendar www.werratal-tourismus.de
Hiking on three premium hiking trails and in the Nordic Walking Park, cycling tours and cycling on the Werratal
cycle path, horse riding, swimming in the heated outdoor pool and canoe tours on the Werra are on the program
for active holidaymakers. Hotels, inns, holiday apartments, private rooms, mobile home ports and the campsite
offer a cozy holiday home. The Tourist Information will be happy to take care of holiday planning and
accommodation arrangements for you.
