City of half-timbered houses, raftsmen and tanners
A Black Forest town like in a picture book. The half-timbered town of Schiltach, known for its medieval townscape,
is centrally located in the Upper Kinzig Valley, in the heart of the Black Forest.
Surrounded by picturesque forested mountains that extend down into the town, you can enjoy the peace and
charm of this small, romantic climatic health resort at any time of the year. The history of Schiltach goes back
to the time of the Romans, who built a connecting road from Strasbourg to Rottweil in 74 AD. The city was first
mentioned in documents in 1275. The tanners and raftsmen made Schiltach famous beyond the borders.
Schiltach has been a state-recognized climatic health resort since 1972 (4,000 inhabitants, 300 - 842 m above
sea level, 300 beds). A small, family-run campsite is centrally located directly on the Kinzig.
Schiltach's old town is probably one of the most famous and beautiful day trip destinations in the Middle Black
Forest. In addition to the many artfully renovated half-timbered houses, the 4 Schiltach museums are particularly
inviting to visit. You can also visit the last chamois leather tannery, where 60,000 skins are still processed into
leather and fur every year using the traditional tanning method.
The natural experience, the fresh Black Forest air and a unique landscape for hiking and cycling are a good
basis for all holiday guests. A modern outdoor pool and numerous other leisure facilities are available for all
active holidaymakers.
