The underground defense system (casemates) of the former castle ranks among the largest early modern defense structures in Western Europe. Alongside the historic old town with its picturesque half-timbered houses and winding alleys, Dillenburg offers numerous attractions as well as a diverse range of hiking and cycling routes, including the famous Rothaarsteig.
