Melsungen

Melsungen is worth it...

Even if you only have one day, you will find that the romantic half-timbered town, with its approximately
14,500 inhabitants, has a lot to offer visitors. The cityscape is still shaped by its long and eventful past.
Melsungen was first mentioned in documents in the first half of the 9th century. The settlement at the Fulda
ford probably existed for a long time. The important east-west connection between the Fritzlar area and the
salt springs of Sooden-Allendorf ran here. Only later did the north-south Fulda valley connection
(Nuremberger Landstrasse) gain in importance. The “burgus” of Melsungen was probably built as a small
town in 1151 and, after its destruction in 1194, was rebuilt into a larger town. In the city center, one lovingly restored half-timbered house follows another. The centerpiece is the historic
town hall from 1555/56, a purely half-timbered building, three floors high. There are four half-timbered towers
at its corners. There is another one on the hipped roof in which the city's symbol, the “Bartenwetzer”, lives, which appears twice a day (12 p.m. and 6 p.m.). Very cozy places in the pedestrian zone, restaurants, pubs and cafés invite you to enjoy North Hesse
specialties. We recommend a guided city tour, which is offered to “everyone” every Tuesday at 2 p.m.,
Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. from May to October. Groups can arrange individual appointments
at any time. Summer Saturday concerts: from May to the beginning of September, music groups play on the market square
every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. But there's always something going on in Melsungen, whether it's a local festival or a shooting festival, a
wine festival, a theater season, concerts, cabaret or a Christmas market - people just love celebrating and
preferably with guests from near and far! Hikers will find around 300 km of marked hiking trails, some on historic paths such as Barbarossaweg,
Sälzerweg, Fuldahöhenweg and Bartenwetzer-Pfad. A well-developed network of paths is available for cyclists to explore the romantic Fulda Valley.
The Fulda cycle path R1 is just one example of many possibilities. The Culture & Tourist Information team will be happy to help you plan and organize your stay!
